It is official – the 2018 Atlantic Hurricane Season has started and will run until November 30th. We’ve already had the first named storm Alberto and there is sure to be plenty of activity behind that one.
2017 Hurricane Season
Last year, 4 hurricanes (Harvey, Irma, Maria and Nate) hit the United States. These affected the Tampa Bay area hard.
We all saw and felt Hurricane Irma which was the most powerful Atlantic hurricane in recorded history. It was a Category 5 storm when it made landfall on Barbuda on September 6, 2017. The winds were 185 miles per hour for 37 hours. That’s longer than any storm ever recorded. It beat Super Typhoon Haiyan, which maintained winds at that level for 24 hours in 2013. Thankfully Irma was downgraded to a Category 1 hurricane as it hit Tampa Bay on September 11, 2017. Almost 6 million people were without electricity. The state had ordered people to begin evacuating on September 9. The death toll was 102 people including 75 in Florida. Florida officials ordered 6.5 million people to evacuate. There were 77,000 people in 450 shelters. According to the insurance company Swiss Re, “Early estimates put the impact to the economy at $100 billion. But damage could climb as high as $300 billion”.
Roof Damage
Hurricanes, storms, tornadoes, hailstorms and thunderstorms can destroy a roof with their rain and wind combination. They can cause missing shingles, missing metal fascia, leaks and water damage, people getting hurt from flying objects, trees falling, property damage, etc.
