Are you putting a new roof on your home? Confused? Worried about making a bad decision? Today we have so many selections available and it can be a daunting task to pick the correct color. Plus, once you put up your new roof, that decision will last a long time and is a big investment. It can be very subjective as to your favorite colors but there is some objective logic that you can use in making the decision.
Here are some things to consider before you order the roofing material and make that final decision.
HOA
If you live in a planned neighborhood, you will have to get approval with your roof plan and colors through your homeowner’s association and subdivision rules and covenants. This could limit you dramatically with your choice so it is wise to get this information up front before you spend a lot of time selecting something or fall in love with a choice you can’t even put up.
Climate
What climate do you live in? The color selection of your shingles can affect the temperature of your attic between 20 to 40 degrees. This can affect the cost of your heating and cooling bill.
Light colored shingles deflect sunlight and keep temperatures cooler in hotter climates.
Dark colored shingles take on or absorb heat and help homes stay warm in cooler climates. If you live in a snowy climate, dark colored shingles help snow and ice melt faster. No worries about that in Tampa Bay!
Energy efficient
To keep your energy bills lower, look into the roof shingles that offer different levels of energy efficiency for attic spaces and roof deck surface temperatures. We already know that the color of your selected shingle makes a difference, but so does the material type.
Architectural style
Think about the architectural style and colors of your home. What would complement your home colors currently? Light colors can make a home look larger. Dark colors can make a home appear smaller.
Statement
Are you looking to “make a statement” with some personality from a roof by selecting something unique?
Contrast
You want a little contrast with your siding or brick which can add dimension. A monotone exterior can be boring and a little lifeless.
View shingles
Make sure you look at the shingle sample in the sun AND in the shade. They can take on different colors and shading. You’ll want to love it both while it is sunny and overcast.
Time in house
Are you thinking about moving in the near future? You’ll want to consider the resale value of your home. Angie’s List states that “a bold, bright roof color may be great for your taste, but it’s not everybody’s cup of tea. If you are thinking about selling your home in the near future, go with a more neutral roofing material to protect your resale value. I have seen homes where the buyers love the inside of a home but are turned off by the roof. I think green shingles are a great look on the right home, but if it does not appeal to the majority of your buyers, you may have a harder time selling your home. However, if you’re planning on staying put, a bold, rich color on a roof can really add character and charm to your home”.
Manufacturer / Roofing Contractor
Depending on the Roofing Contractor that you hire to install your roof, they typically work with manufacturers or they are preferred vendors with specific training on installation, repair and maintenance. These manufacturers offer certain colors. Some of the manufacturers are GAF, Timberline, CertainTeed, Owens Corning, etc. and if you go to their websites, you will see their color selections. Owens Corning has a color visualizer tool, where you can see what different color roofs might look like on a home like yours. Ask your Roofing Contractor if they have samples you can see.
