Happy Labor Day to you and your family! The first Labor Day was held on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City. It was created by the Central Labor Union to generate a holiday for workers. It officially became a national holiday in the United States and Canada in 1894.
Labor Day is a special day to pay tribute to our working men and women. The original form of the holiday was a street parade to show the public the strength and esprit de corps of the trade and labor organizations followed by a large picnic to provide some fun for workers and their families, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.
For a lot of people, this day now signifies the end of summer and people take a long weekend of vacation or backyard barbecues. Most businesses close for the first Monday of September known as Labor Day.
Eight-Hour Work Day
Labor Day is tied to the labor union movement and creating the eight-hour workday for laborers. Oregon was the first state to declare Labor Day as a holiday on February 21, 1887. In 1894 thirty states officially celebrated Labor Day by the time it became a federal holiday.
